On Oct. 29, 1949, Headquarters 14th Air Force began operations at Robins AFB. Maj. Gen. Charles E. Thomas Jr., formerly the first Depot commander, commanded 14AF until January 1955. Thomas was also instrumental in building the first golf course at Robins, which was opened Aug. 4, 1951.
