Robins AIR FORCE BASE, Ga. -- On Nov. 9, 1941, then Col. Charles Thomas Jr., activated the Southeast (formerly Georgia) Air Depot upon his arrival at Wellston, Georgia. The next day, he established temporary depot headquarters in a tent at Herbert Smart Air Field in Macon, which also doubled as one of several sub-depots of the Southeast Air Depot.
