Dormitory demolition to last two months Published April 11, 2014 By Capt Jenny Durham Robins Public Affairs ROBINS AIR FORCE BASE, Ga. -- And the walls came tumbling down. The 78th Civil Engineer Group began demolition Tuesday on one of the buildings formerly used as an Airman dormitory. It was originally built in 1997. This particular dorm had 120 rooms, was 49,954 square feet, and has been vacant since 2011. According to Robins officials, it's being demolished because the building had issues which would make it more costly to renovate than it would be to demolish. "There are no plans at this time for what will replace the building, but the engineering division is currently in the draft phase of a new dormitory master plan," said Stefanie Dawson, 78th CEG Project Execution section chief. Plans for the demolition of Bldg. 792 started more than a year ago, but took a long time due to inspections and the removal of items within the structure. The demolition is scheduled to take about two months to complete. Florida contractors are performing the demolition.
