ROBINS AIR FORCE BASE, Ga. --
Less than a year after standing up, the 950th Spectrum Warfare Group added two new detachments to its mission set during a combined detachment activation and change of command ceremony at Robins Air Force Base, Georgia, Aug. 8, 2025.
Lt. Cols. Scott Pratt and Adam Peachman assumed command of newly activated Detachments 1 and 2 of the 950th SWG, respectively.
The two detachments will support the 950th SWG mission to provide assessments of electromagnetic spectrum operations capabilities. The assessments provide commanders and warfighters with surety in their capabilities, identify areas for improved tactics, and inform future EMSO acquisitions.
“Our efforts provide senior Air Force leaders, warfighters and acquisition programs with the actionable data they need to make vital decisions — from the equipment needed to build a ready force to tactical decisions made in the cockpit,” said Col. Michael Middents, 950th SWG commander.
Detachment 1 will become the 501st Electronic Warfare Squadron to support the electromagnetic spectrum operations mission through modeling and simulation. The squadron will provide operational and tactical level assessments using data-driven models and realistic simulated scenarios to determine the most effective way to deploy airpower using the electromagnetic spectrum ensuring the lethality and survivability of operations.
“Modeling and simulation is a well-established technique for wargaming and test exercises,” said Pratt. “Our capabilities will aid planners in developing operational plans and concepts of operations that are EMSO-informed and effectively integrate kinetic and non-kinetic warfighting capabilities.”
Detachment 2 is set to become the 81st EWS, which will focus on the expansion of the Combat Shield Electronic Warfare Assessment Program that provides assessments for long-range kill chain key enablers.
Peachman described the mission as the digital equivalent to a sniper team that carefully analyzes the battlefield, identifies threats, and ensures that warfighters’ shots hit their mark using sophisticated electromagnetic countermeasures.
“We’re going to figure out how to make sure that our weapons can reach out and touch the bad guys when they’re doing their best to jam us, hack us, and generally make our lives more difficult,” said Peachman.
During the detachment ceremonies, Lt. Col. Peter Johnson assumed command of the 17th EWS from outgoing commander, Lt. Col. Ryan Cox.
“The importance of what we’re building cannot be overstated,” said Cox. “It will save lives, shape battlefields, and win wars.”
The 950th Spectrum Warfare Group at Robins Air Force Base, Georgia, is a geographically separated unit of the 350th Spectrum Warfare Wing at Eglin AFB, Florida.
