Robins VBS is a blast for youth Published June 13, 2008 By Amanda Creel 78 ABW/PA Robins Air Force Bae, GA -- Robins Base Chapel delighted children with a backyard adventure this week. The backyard adventure, "God's Big Backyard" was open to all school-age children and offered a variety of activities. The Vacation Bible School taught students about serving others such as their families, friends, neighbors, community and Jesus, said Kiley Glass, protestant religious education coordinator for the Robins Chapel. During the week, the children had the chance to learn Bible stories such as the four men who carried their friend to Jesus. "The man didn't walk, so they carried him to Jesus to get help," said Sophia Andino, 7. One of the ways the students implemented what they learned was by participating in trust-building exercises with their friends such as closing their eyes and following their leader. "We are learning about friendship, so we had to trust our friends to guide us to a place we needed to go," said Rachel Jones, 11. The children were treated to daily puppet shows and taught a variety of songs. "My favorite song is God's Big Backyard," said Anna Bell, 11, as she illustrated some of the hand jives that accompany the song. While, Niala Herrera, 6, said her favorite part was watching the puppet shows. "There's a squirrel and a dog and they talk to each other. They talk to each other about eating nuts," she said. The students also made a variety of crafts during the week such as squirrels and gift bags. "I liked making the helping-hands necklace. The hardest part was putting on the heart bead," said Micah Pinckney. The children also participated in races, dodge ball and kickball. No matter what the activity the attendees were involved in a spiritual message or lesson was also offered. "If they come out knowing that Jesus loves me then it's been a success," said Liz McCarthy, director of Catholic religious education.
