A group of Georgia College & State graduate students is teaming with the Joint Advisory Council of the 542nd Combat Sustainment Wing and the 638 Supply Chain Management Group for a holiday food drive.

Collection bins for canned food will be placed at the north end of the east and west wings of buildings 300 and 301 through Nov. 14. The food is being collected for the Macon Rescue Mission, which has seen its food stores dwindle of late.

Blaming the sagging economy and increased demand for food boxes, the mission for the first time closed its food pantry in August.

That's when graduate students in the Business Ethics and Global Responsibilities class at GC&SU decided to take on the food drive as its community service project, said Will Calhoun, one of the students.

The Joint Advisory Council organizes morale and welfare activities for the 542nd CSW and the 638 SCMG, said Ed Armijo, a member the council.

He said the council got involved in the project in part because of the difficulty the students would have getting on base.
