Robins athletes invited to Air Force volleyball camp Published May 15, 2009 By Wayne Crenshaw 78 ABW/PA ROBINS AIR FORCE BASE, Ga. -- Two Team Robins members will be trying next week to make the Air Force women's volleyball team. Staff Sgt. Briana Cervantes of the 116th Logistics Readiness Squadron and Senior Airman Misty Mahlerwein of the 78th Air Base Wing headquarters are heading to Hill Air Force Base in Utah for the training camp. The camp starts Saturday and runs through June 2. They will be among 20 players trying to make a squad of 12 that will play in the Armed Forces Tournament against teams from the Army, Navy and Marines. The tournament will be held in Cherry Point, N.C. June 3-20. Airman Mahlerwein is a former college player and is making her first attempt at the team in her three years in the Air Force. "I've always wanted to try out, I just haven't been able to for the past two years," she said. Sergeant Cervantes is making her third try for the team. She was cut the first two attempts, but she isn't giving up. "I really want to try and make it one time in my career," she said while pausing during a practice at the Fitness Center on Wednesday. She is putting much more effort into trying to make the team this time, she said. She didn't do much practicing in her previous attempts but this time she's practicing regularly, and she even has a coach. Toafa Tui, an Air Force retiree, is a long-time coach in the Junior Olympics and local recreation leagues, where he met Sergeant Cervantes. He has been working with both of the players to prepare them for the camp, which he said can be a grueling test of endurance. He expressed confidence that they can make the team. "They have the skills and they have the enthusiasm," he said. Active-duty Air Force personnel apply to be on the team, then coaches select who will be invited to camp.
