Picking up where it left off last year, the 78th Medical Group's intramural football team is kicking butt and taking names.

Following on the heels of an undefeated 14-0 season and an intramural championship last season, the team finished the regular season 8-0 and is the top seed in the postseason tournament.

Michael Dunbrunn, who plays linebacker and receiver, said he expected the team to go undefeated again, mainly because, with the exception of one or two new players, most the players from last year's undefeated team have returned.

"We play together as a team," Dunbrunn said. "We know each others' strengths and weaknesses and how to play. We just go out there and have fun."

Player-coach Senior Airman Deron Wilson said it's the team's defense that is making the difference and the primary reason the team is off to such a great start.

"Our defense is our strength," he said. "We have rocky games on offense, but our defense is always sound."

He said they have allowed just 13 points to opposing teams all season, and have not trailed in any game. The coach said if the team has one weakness, it is lack of patience on offense. "We are always looking for big plays, to deliver that knockout punch."

Tech. Sgt. Samuel Orr said despite its great record, the team is working to show up to every game focused and to not let down.

"We know better than to underestimate any team," Orr said. "We come out and play hard every play." He said two things have been instrumental in the team's success this season. The first is that players play different positions.

Having players get experience at all the positions helps when players miss games due to TDYs or other commitments. The second thing is that the team runs a no-huddle offense.

"We use hand signals and try to catch the defense off guard," Orr said. "It keeps them on their heels. We don't give our opponents time to adjust or substitute."

Orr said he thinks the 78th MDG takes the games a little more seriously than other teams. "Of course we play for fun, but losing is no fun," he said.

The coach said they have avoided injury this season, in part, due to limiting the amount of time the team practices.

Thursday, the team defeated the league's other unbeaten team, the 402nd Software Maintenance Squadron.
