Son of 116th ACW colonel commissioned by President Obama Published May 7, 2010 By Wayne Crenshaw 78 ABW/PA ROBINS AFB, Ga. -- It's a 900-mile drive from Robins to the University of Michigan football stadium, but it was worth every mile for Lt. Col. Joseph Richardson. Richardson, an operations officer in the 116th Air Control Wing, made the trip with several family members to see his son get commissioned by the commander in chief. The commissioning ceremony took place Saturday just before the school's commencement at its football stadium. Deke Richardson, a Reserve Officer Training Corps cadet at the university, was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Air Force. President Obama, who delivered the commencement address, commissioned 30 ROTC cadets. "We are really excited," Colonel Richardson said in a phone interview from Ann Arbor prior to the ceremony. "It's something that's really unique." His son wants to be a pilot and is now headed to flight school at Laughlin Air Force Base, Texas.
