Boilers aren't complex. They essentially turn cold water into hot water or steam. But the equipment has come a long way over the years.

That's why Robins engineers are looking at replacing all of the boiler systems on base, which on average are more than a decade old. Newer models, which allow greater control of steam output, could lower Robins' annual natural gas bill almost $1 million.

They're also looking at positioning boilers closer to facilities and other measures to reduce the size of the steam distribution system, as well as the possibility of replacing the entire system.

The ideas are currently being analyzed to determine not only their practicality but cost, according to Nancy Manley, director of the 78th Civil Engineer Group's Asset Management Division.

The improvements, which will have no significant adverse effect on the people or mission, could conceivably be accomplished within a two- to three-year period, she said.
