Base announces Youth of the Year award winner Published June 15, 2012 By Jenny Gordon Robins Public Affairs ROBINS AIR FORCE BASE, Ga. -- The Robins Air Force Base Youth of the Year is Shaun Walds. He is the son of retired Master Sgt. Calvin Walds, currently assigned to the 404th Supply Chain Management Squadron. His mother is Perlita Walds, who works with the 402nd Electronics Maintenance Group. Shaun, 17, has participated in youth programs since he was 7 years old. He served as president of the Keystone Club and as a member of the base's Teen Council. He is a graduate of Northside High School and will attend Middle Georgia College this fall. Air Force YOY annual programs work in partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, to provide youth leadership opportunities. The national program recognizes one outstanding young person from each installation, who competes with other youth at the state, regional and national levels. Winners are chosen based on scholastic achievement, community service, leadership and good character. A ceremony is conducted at the Pentagon each year recognizing each command and base winner. It will take place Wednesday through June 23 in Washington, D.C., and will be emceed this year by Marvin Hawkins, teen coordinator from the Robins Youth Center, 78th Force Support Squadron.
