Airman 1st Class Amanda Van Speybroeck, a Wichita Falls, Texas, native has been selected to serve on a 10-member panel as part of the Airman-to-Airman Safety Advisory Council Charter.

"If I can get one person not to make a bad decision which will affect them, their friends and family for the rest of their lives, then I've done something good to make people realize how important safety really is," said Van Speybroeck, 78th Medical Group Flight Medicine Personnel Reliability Program monitor.

She joined the service more than two years ago at the age of 22 to care for her mother who was suffering from alcohol and drug dependence.

Thirty days after she joined, her mother died from an alcohol-related incident.

Her desire to touch the lives of others sparked her to write an essay that was forwarded to the major command level concerning safety. Her message afforded her the opportunity to serve as a panel member.

The council is designed to promote safety amongst Airmen between the ages of 17 and 26, and Airmen who can deliver a powerful message to a peer audience are selected. Duties include working with the base safety office, engaging in public speaking throughout the Air Force and communities, and making public safety announcements.
