On Aug. 26, 1981, Air Force officials announced their proposal to locate a Phased Array Warning System site (PAVE PAWS) at Robins. On Jan. 10, 1986, PAVE PAWS underwent its first high‑powered “into the atmosphere” testing. The new facility building was the tallest in Houston County at the time. The PAVE PAWS Expansion Program was designed to replace the FPS-85 and FSS-7 SLBM surveillance radars in the southeastern United States. In 1995, during the Cold War draw down, the Robins radar station closed. Eventually, all the PAVE PAWS sites were replaced in late 1999 with more advance radar systems.
