ROBINS AIR FORCE BASE, Ga. -- Between April 24 and 26, 1948, USAF and Allied airplanes began the resupply of West Berlin (Operation Vittles) as a result of the Soviet blockade, which cut off access roads from West German Allied zones of occupation through East Germany to West Berlin. Workers at WRAMA refurbished 16,000 spark plugs per month for nearly a year in support of the airlift. Among other items supplied by WRAMA were parachutes and landing gear parts. The airlift, which lasted nearly fifteen months, consisted of 277,264 flights carrying 2.3 million tons of supplies to West Berlin. The first deliveries took place when 32 C- 47s delivered 80 tons of cargo comprised mainly of powdered milk, flour, and medicine.
