ROBINS AIR FORCE BASE, Ga. --
Some military members may feel a bit disconnected when they retire, but the new Robins’ Retiree Activities Office director hopes to change that.
Burl Jimmerson, who became the base’s RAO director in August, already has a great vision for keeping Robins’ military retiree community informed and connected.
The 66-year-old Niagara Falls, New York, native is charged with providing information, services and programs to military retirees of all ranks, all services. The RAO mission is to: act as an interface between the active-duty and retired communities; keep retirees updated on various matters; provide information and services as necessary or appropriate; and to represent retired members at the base and Air Force level as well as support Robins organizations. The RAO also provides whatever assistance is requested by the installation commander in achieving the base mission.
Jimmerson plans to host committee meetings in building 767, to generate new ideas and procedures to help retirees and support the mission.
The Air Force retiree, who retired from aircraft sheet metal and financial analysis work at Robins in 2008, has plans to go the extra mile to help retirees be successful in the civilian world.
“Upon leaving the Air Force in 1977, the only thing I was told was where the local Labor Department was,” Jimmerson said. “I want those retiring to understand how to transition into civilian world.”
When he’s out of the office, Jimmerson enjoys helping veterans with their Veterans Affairs claims and working in the Carl Vinson VA Medical Center. He also serves on his church’s finance committee, and enjoys target shooting, reading, and going to Georgia Tech home football games.
Currently, Jimmerson works in the RAO office in building 767 Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 8 to 11 a.m., but he has hopes to expand the office’s hours.
“In the near future, I’m looking for volunteers to help man the RAO so we can help retirees from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. five days a week,” he said. “Visibility is very important to let retirees know there is help at Robins Air Force Base, and it’s important to have annual activities that inform not only the retiree but the entire family.”
