World War II remembered

Although he never saw combat in World War II, Arthur Lee Adams Jr., affectionately known as Red, saw the result. Adams was in school at the University of Georgia when his father bought him two mules and gave him a small piece of land in Webster County, Georgia so he wouldn’t be eligible to be drafted. After a year of farming, Adams decided he was ready to be in the military and went to talk to the Army Air Corps draft board. “I flew over Nagasaki, the second bombing sight. They had cleaned it up but you could tell there was nothing there,” Adams said. He was in Japan for a little under a year and after he was sent home, he worked as a rural mail carrier. William Thames, whose name is pronounced like the river in England, joined the Navy in 1944. His unit, the 37th Special Construction Battalion, was sent to California by train. For what seemed like an eternity, Thames outfitted ships with white pine board. Thames, now 88, married Doris Youngblood and the pair have been married for 63 years. Col. Jeffrey King, Robins’ installation and 78th Air Base Wing commander, greets John Barrett, Army veteran, during a reception at the Museum of Aviation in Warner Robins, Ga., Aug. 21. Barrett – a private first class during the war -- received a Purple Heart and Silver Star after being wounded in action and taken as a prisoner of war during World War II. The reception honored veterans who served aboard B-17s and celebrated the arrival of a B-17 Flying Fortress which will be displayed at the museum. The engines, wings and tail section of the aircraft -- which arrived a day earlier -- were on display during the reception. At the event, several B-17 crew members shared their memories of the aircraft with nearly 200 attendees. (U.S. Air Force photo by Tommie Horton)

All Call

Cpl. Justin Hall, a crash investigator with Houston County Sheriff’s Office, talks to Airmen at an All Call July 2. Stories, statistics, education and awareness about alcohol consumption were part of briefing. According to Hall, it’s an individual decision whether or not to drink and drive, and it’s a voluntary one at that. He said everyone always wants to be given a number on how many drinks are too many in order to drive. “The number is zero,” he said. (U.S. Air Force photo by Ed Aspera)
