Unbeaten 78th MDG wins flag football intramural title Published Nov. 7, 2008 By Wayne Crenshaw 78 ABW/PA ROBINS AIR FORCE BASE, Ga. -- The undefeated 78th Medical Group overcame a scrappy upset bid by 78th Security Forces Squadron to win the intramural flag football championship Nov. 3. With neither side generating much offense, the score was tied 8-8 with six minutes left in the game when the 78th MDG took over at its own 15 following a punt. On third and long they faked a pass and then handed off to Tech Sgt. Samuel Orr, who sliced through the defense for a 50-yard run to the opponent's 35-yard line. From there, a completed pass and a quarterback sneak by Devereux Glass gave the 78th MDG the lead for good. 78th SFS had a chance to tie, driving to the opposing 30 with 1:04 left, but an interception ended the team's chances. "I think we played great," said Airman Deron Wilson, coach of the 78th MDG, after the win. "We had some mistakes in the beginning but in the second half we regrouped." Wilson also had the first touchdown of the game, taking a short pass and running it nearly 80 yards for the score and an extra-point kick, worth two points in flag football, to make it 8-0. The 78th SFS then answered with a long drive that ended with Senior Airman Richard Booker scoring from two yards out, and the extra point kick tied it. Wilson credited the team's championship and undefeated season to "consistency and defense." He noted that the defense gave up a touchdown to only one other team during the season. The 78th SFS went into the game with a 9-4 record. Master Sgt. Vincent Dewberry, the team's coach, said the four losses came in the middle of the season. He blamed the losses on difficulty in keeping the team intact, considering the round-the-clock nature of the Security Forces mission. "Once we got our team at full strength and gathered our composure we rolled on through," he said.
