After coming up short in the title game last year, the 78th Security Forces Squadron intramural flag football team did not want that to happen again.

Back in July, the 78th SFS and the 116th Air Control Wing were the first teams to start practicing. Their hard work paid off, as both made it to the championship game Jan. 7 with the 78th SFS coming out on top.

Master Sgt. Vincent Dewberry, coach of the 78th SFS, said the unit last won the title in 2002.

"I'm very proud of my folks and it was a long time coming for them," he said. "It was a big relief and we were terribly excited."

The 78th SFS had not lost in the double- elimination playoffs until the night of the championship. With the 116th ACW already with a loss, the 78th SFS could have won the title in the first game but fell 14-10. They won the second game 14-7 in a hard fought battle. On the last drive of the game with seconds left on the clock, the 116th ACW ran a play that got them to the one yard line but they couldn't get another play off before time ran out.

Dewberry credited the win to adjustments made on defense to stop the 116th ACW's formidable run game.

Despite the loss, 116th ACW coach Capt. Billy Carter said he was happy with the way his team played. "It was very hard fought in both games," he said.

Although some people may think of flag football as a leisurely affair, it's not really the case. Carter said many of the players on the teams of the 78th SFS, the 116th ACW, and the 78th Medical Group, which won the title last year, have been playing each other for years. It makes for a spirited rivalry, he said.

"When it comes down to it, it's pride and competition," Carter said. "It gets extremely intense at times."
